This is a list of the top 5 saddest moments in “The Fault in our Stars”. Be careful if you are in the process of reading this book, or plan to in the future there are spoilers!

5. Issac gets dumped by his girlfriend because he went blind because of his cancer
One of Hazel’s best friends from her cancer support group is Issac. Issac has retinoblastoma (eyeball cancer). Issac has a girlfriend Monica and they have always been very close. Issac already has one glass eye and one real one, and now he is going to have to get his one good one removed because of the cancer returning. When Issac gets his eye removed he will lose his sight completely. When Issac tells Monica this she instantly dumps him because she is scared and can’t “deal” with having blind boyfriend.
4. The doctors tell Hazel she is too sick to go to Amsterdam
Hazel’s boyfriend is using his “one wish” to take himself and Hazel to Amsterdam where the author of their favourite book lives. When her boyfriend (Augustus) purposes the idea to her she is all over it, but still has to convince her smothering parents, and overprotective doctor to let her go. Hazel and Augustus spend hours, and days talking about their trip to Amsterdam, and they are figuring out a way to convince her parents to let her go. Finally Hazel plucks up the courage, and they say no. I don’t know why this was so sad. It was just one of those moments when you wanted everything to go right, but then everything goes wrong and it’s just really sad.
3. When Hazel drives around in her car after the funeral and cries
(SPOILER ALERT: Augustus dies) After Augustus dies, they had a funeral and after the funeral Hazel sees that the author from Amsterdam came to the funeral too. From the author she learned 2 things: 1- his daughter also died from cancer, and 2- Before Augustus died he had written something for Hazel. So Hazel drives all around everywhere Augustus had been since they returned from Amsterdam and kept looking for the note he wrote her.
2. When Augustus gets sick in the gas station parking lot, and calls Hazel
When Hazel and Augustus got home from Amsterdam Augustus admits to hazel that the cancer returned to his body, Augustus got osteosarcoma (bone cancer) all around his body. One night he was arguing with his parents saying that it was his life so he could do what he wanted with it. His parents disagreed, so he took the car and drove off to a gas station. While he was there he had a medical emergency, and the only person he wanted to call was Hazel, and they both agreed that the only way for him to live was for Augustus to be taken to the hospital, but the thing that really gets me is the fact that the only person he wanted to call was Hazel.
1. When Augustus dies
As I already gave away Augustus dies, he died in the hospital a few days after the gas station incident. The cancer had spread to his brain, and he went unconscious a few hours before he died. Hazel was not there when he died, but she was there as soon as she heard the bad news. Everyone was miserable after he died, and hazel was not eating or sleeping for weeks. She found herself reading and re-reading the note that Augustus had left her. His death took a toll on everyone in the book, and everyone who read it.
